L’activité principale du groupe OXID se concentre sur l’élaboration et la caractérisation de nouveaux composés inorganiques en tachant d’accéder à des arrangements structuraux inédits et originaux, souvent relativement complexes. La plupart du temps, ces nouveaux composés possèdent des propriétés physiques remarquables, également souvent complexes. Cette activité fondamentale des chimistes du solide, bien que nécessaire au renouveau des matériaux à propriétés originales a presque totalement disparu au niveau national au profit d’une chimie dite "des matériaux", faite d’optimisation et de mise en forme, plus lucrative à court terme. Notre volonté de persister dans cette voie exploratoire est en partie inspirée par le CNRS via l’Action Nationale organisée en octobre 2011 à Bordeaux : “De la nécessite d’une recherche exploratoire de nouvelles phases et d’édifices nouveaux”. Nous nous appliquons à développer des voies de synthèse originales. En effet, a côté des synthèses classiques solide-solide, pour trouver de nouveaux composés, nous nous employons à diversifier au maximum nos techniques de synthèse (utilisation de fours micro-ondes, fours à induction, electro-synthèse, synthèses haute-pression, hydrothermales, en sels fondus, sous atmosphère contrôlée, en flux, par gradients de température, etc…). De plus, nous nous attachons à appliquer une réelle stratégie d’élaboration, inspirée des outils modernes maintenant disponibles aux chimistes du solide (approche rationnelle en termes de cristallochimie modulaire, calculs prédictifs par DFT …). En particuliers, la prédiction/réalisation de structures inorganiques à propriétés ciblées (magnétiques, électriques, optiques …) par assemblages de motifs élémentaires est un point stratégique.

Collaborations

Dans le cadre de nos recherches, nous collaborons avec de nombreux laboratoires et Universités au niveau national et international, dont le CRISMAT-Caen, l’IPCMS-Strasbourg, l’IMN-Nantes, LLB-Saclay, ILL-CEA-Grenoble, l’ICMCB-Bordeaux, LRCS-Amiens, North Carolina State University, l’Université de Moscou, l’Université de St Pétersbourg, l’Université industrielle de Santander etc…

Faits marquants

Notre activité tourne entre autre autour du « Design » de nouveaux matériaux inorganiques à charpente complexe et la rationalisation de quelques familles de matériaux. En particulier, au niveau des composés du bismuth, nous manipulons (plus ou moins facilement…) des motifs oxo-centrés et les assemblons de manière variées. Ces assemblages contrôlés conduisent à la stabilisation d’édifices originaux, initialement prévus par exemple par DFT et mènent par exemple à des édifices non-centrosymétriques actifs en optique non linéaire. Cette démarche implique la formation de composés de dimensionnalité variable, mais aussi l’exfoliation/recombinaison de motifs inorganiques nanométriques a partir de composés parents. Nous avons pour cela intégré dans l’équipe des compétences en calcul ab-initio permettant de sonder la stabilité d’une structure-cible.

Outre les composés du bismuth, la prédiction d’oxydes de métaux de transition à valence mixte inédits 2D ou 3D via les blocs élémentaires (dérivés de la perovskite, réseau triangulaires, etc ….) et les interfaces (couches anioniques, polyanions …etc) ont mis en évidence de nombreux composés inédits. L’ensemble de cette chimie combinatoire met en jeu un parc de techniques de synthèse qui s’étend de la chimie douce (pression autogène, micro-onde, voie topotactique … etc) à la réaction solide-solide (atmosphère contrôlée, haute pression, chauffage par induction … etc.). Suivant cette approche rationnelle, au niveau des composés magnétiques, nous avons, entre autre, préparé de manière inédite, une dizaine de phases dont la topologie spécifique est à l’ origine de phénomènes magnétiques « rarissimes » de type spin-flop, métamagnetisme, plateaux d’aimantation…etc. On note par exemple le premier exemple d’oxyde ferromagnétique 2D de type Ising (BaFe2(PO4)2), ou le premier exemple de réseau magnétique « mappleleaf » dans Bi8Mn6O23. Chacun de ces composés de par leur structure ou comportement parfois « exotique » sont particulièrement intéressants pour le développement théorique du magnétisme de basse dimensionnalité. Une partie de notre travail a également été dédié à la préparation de composés oxydes inédits en tachant d’accéder à une valence mixte, via la modification du sous-réseau anionique par création de lacunes oxygénées, ou par substitution de O2- par un halogène X-. Encore une fois les nombreux composés identifiés et caractérisés se déduisent souvent les uns des autres par une cristallochimie modulaire (assemblage de blocs) dont les interfaces sont assurées par les couches anioniques halogénées de manière plus ou moins ordonnées. Comme résultat fort, nous avons pu montrer dans une famille de composés oxo-halogénures de cobalt (III et IV) dérivée des perovskites hexagonales, que les blocs conservent leurs propriétés ferromagnétiques, alors que l’assemblage entre les blocs induit les propriétés du « bulk », ferromagnétiques, antiferromagnétiques ou méta-magnétiques suivant le type de connectivité via les anions X- (F, Cl, Br). Ceci a conduit à la notion inédite de lego magnétique. De plus, les phases obtenues présentent parfois une mobilité ionique à très basse température.

Outre la production de nouveaux composés alimentant, par exemple, les équipes de l’axe (matériaux pour l’énergie) ou potentiellement composés « modèle » pour des études combinant diverses approches complémentaires (e.g. complémentarité RMN/DRX pour la mise en évidence de liaisons covalentes V-O, prédiction structurale par décodage d’image HREM), nous nous intéressons au renouveau méthodologique des techniques de diffraction.

Ainsi nous nous travaillons avec des techniques de cristallographie avancée sur des systèmes apériodiques ou désordonnés (Méthode de l’Entropie Maximum, super-espace, agitation anharmonique). Dans ce cadre et en collaboration avec Lukas Palatinus (Prague, Rep. Tchèque), nous a avons pu maîtriser la méthode de précession électronique. Les premiers résultats obtenus valident la possibilité d'affinement structural sur une nanocristallite isolée.

Finalement, l’acquisition récente au niveau de la plateforme RX d’un diffractomètre à anode tournante a permis l’émergence d’une thématique nouvelle, a savoir la caractérisation par diffraction X haute résolution de films minces. Les relations d’épitaxies entre les couches et les substrats peuvent alors être étudiées systématiquement en réalisant des cartographies de l’espace réciproque et/ou des figures de pôle, permettant bien souvent d’expliquer les propriétés physiques du film. Cette nouvelle activité, très transversale au sein de l’UCCS et au-delà, est mené en collaboration, notamment avec l’IEMN.
